About UK Telecoms Lab

The UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) was born from a vision to shape a better-connected and more resilient future. Funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), UKTL was opened in Solihull in 2023 to advance the UK’s 5G Diversification Strategy and support the government’s mission of making the UK a science and technology superpower by 2030. The announcement was made during Birmingham Tech Week 2023 at the ‘Global West Midlands’ event, highlighting UKTL’s aim to drive the security, resilience and performance of the UK’s telecommunication networks and champion cyber security by providing testing services and identifying vulnerabilities in telecoms infrastructure. Positioned in the fast-growing West Midlands technology hub, UKTL is helping to nurture talent and close the digital skills gap to ensure the UK is ready for the challenges facing the telecoms sector, strengthening a region already recognised for its leading 5G connectivity. UKTL supports the UK’s ambition to be a world leader in the development of future communications technology, and brings together telecom operators, suppliers and stakeholders to build stronger, safer and smarter networks and a more connected future. The UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL) is the UK’s national telecoms security and resilience testing and research facility, operated by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
